Computer Facilities - Access and Use Rules
Eligibility
The Computer Facilities are available to University of Minnesota students.
A current ID card and fee statement are required for admittance.
Fees
Access to ADCS Computer Facilities is free for:
- students currently registered.
- faculty or staff developing courseware for use in ADCS computer facilities.
Access Priorities
These priorities are based on our responsibility to support and
enhance the teaching mission of the University of Minnesota.
Access priorities are listed below in descending order of priority:
1. Class or other group reservations for instructional purposes.
2. Individual students working on course assignments.
3. Faculty or staff doing work supporting instructional use of the facilities.
In addition, specific departments may have priority in certain
facilities, based on factors such as providing space and support for the facility.
Sign-in and Sign-out Procedures
Everyone who uses the Computer Facilities must follow the procedures listed below. In addition, use of any facility is limited to two hours per session or day. However, if there is no waiting list for equipment an extension of the time limit may be allowed at the discretion of the lab consultant.
- Sign-in at the consultant desk (except when a class session has been arranged).
- Present proper identification (ID and fee statement for students) when requested by the lab consultant.
- Complete work or end session (including printing) before the scheduled facility closing time.
- Sign-out when finished and leave the facility.
Access Rules
Those who use the University's Computer Facilities must:
- Be eligible as described above. Violations include but are not limited to:
- impersonating an eligible student by using their ID, fee statement or other identifying information
- assisting an ineligible person to use computer facilities in any way
- Use computer facility hardware and software appropriately. Violations include but are not limited to:
- disconnecting, reconnecting or reconfiguring hardware
- copying software that is copyrighted or otherwise restricted
- using the computing facilities for non-University work
- removing, changing or reconfiguring files on facility disks including hard drives
- damaging or removing any property from the facility
- using software that interferes with facility operations (e.g., games or viruses that debilitate or crash
individual machines or networks)
- using software that interferes with other facility users (e.g., emits loud or obnoxious sounds) or which is
used to capture information from them (e.g., keystroke capture software)
- Abide by these rules, procedures and protocols:
- use printer access cards to pay for all pages printed
- refrain from eating, drinking or smoking in a computer facility (lab consultants are often scheduled for
long shifts or over meal times and may eat/drink at their desk only)
- sign in and/or out properly, and provide identification when requested by a facility consultant.
- use only the assigned machine and move to another only with the explicit permission of the consultant on
duty
- respond appropriately to requests made by the facility consultant (eg., a request to move to another
machine or to delay printing due to a class being held in the facility) in the normal course of carrying out
job responsibilities
- refrain from the generation, display or printing of offensive material as covered by the University's
policy on equal opportunity and non-discrimination, including sexually or racially offensive or harassing materials
- refrain from disruptive, threatening or abusive language or behavior
- Wear shirts and footwear. Roller blades are prohibited
Penalties
Violations of the above rules may constitute violations of state and/or federal laws as well as of the Student Conduct Code and will be
prosecuted in any applicable venue(s). In addition, violations may result in immediate suspension or denial of facility use privileges.
If you fail to pay printing or other required fees, a hold may be placed on your record, and you may be denied access to the facilities.
Academic and Distributed Computing Services
