U Rent-a-Guru Computer Security Package

U Rent-a-Guru offers a computer security package for Windows 2000, XP and Vista operating systems to better secure computers from viruses, hackers, etc. This service is a 37 step process and begins the process of securing your computer. To ensure ongoing security, you must keep your computer updated by installing future windows and software updates. We follow the computer security guidelines and recommendations from Office of Information Technology (OIT) Security .
U Rent-a-Guru Basic Security Package includes:
- Install most recent Microsoft critical security updates and/or service packs and configure automatic installation of future updates. It is important that customers continue the process and install future updates.
- Install a software firewall.
- Install antispyware software.
- Install and run antivirus software and configure for future updates. Available to customers who provide us with Antivirus software or if customer is eligible for U of M Symantec Antivirus software program. U Rent-a-Guru consultants install the most recent updates, and customers will need to install future updates.
- Run 5 complete scans of the computer to detect and remove viruses and spyware.
- Configure email client to use SSL for U of M accounts, if applicable.
- Remove dust inside and out of the computer.
- Change Administrator and user passwords to strong passwords, following the guidelines set forth from OIT Security. LANMAN hash will be disabled, if customer requests.
- Remove File and Print Sharing for Residence Hall students or if customer requests.
Need the Security Package + operating system reinstalled?
U Rent-a-Guru consultants may recommend an OS install as well to completely eliminate all viruses/trojans from your system. Reinstalling the OS eliminates additional baggage that slows down your computer (old programs, patch files, history files, temporary files, etc.). After an OS install, many users report computer performance improvements such as their programs and web pages load faster.
Some viruses or trojans have keyloggers or back door logins. For this reason, U-Rent-a-Guru consultants may recommend a complete Security Package + an operating system reinstall. This combination service is discounted $30 from the regular price of the security package and OS install.

Make sure you install future Microsoft critical updates and patches, as well as antivirus software updates. Both Macs and PCs regularly release security updates to their operating system. Most software vendors (especially those providing e-mail and web browsing clients) do as well. You should do everything you can to keep your software up-to-date.

The components of the Security Package + an operating system reinstall + your data, email, address books and Internet bookmarks/favorites backed up to a U Rent-a-Guru server and restored back on your computer. Data transfer is only an additional $40 when purchased with this package, regardless of how much data you have. Transfer of data to CDs or DVDs is also available with an additional fee for the media.
