Virus Removal
Operating System Reinstallation
For a guaranteed removal of malware and viruses, Rent-A-Guru recommends a complete reinstallation of your operating system to eradicate any trace of malicious software that is more often than not embedded in the Windows system files themselves. Not only is this option more effective, but it is much quicker than our comprehensive security package offered below, meaning that you'll have your computer back and running well in a matter of a few days (assuming your hardware is in good shape).
You can choose to simply reinstall your OS without a data backup for $89 or you can let us back up your documents, music, pictures, and any other data you specify at check-in for $119. For more information on our data backup procedure, click here. Please note that we do not back up your installed programs (e.g. Microsoft Office, Matlab, games) - only your files - so you will either need to reinstall them yourself or provide us with the discs and have us do it for $29 per title.
For each OS install we perform, we install hardware drivers and Windows updates, as well as Symantec Antivirus for those who are affliated with the University. If you choose to let us back up your data, we scan your files for viruses and put them back into your user folder - right where you left them. We will also run hardware tests to ensure your computer is working correctly.
Security Package
If you do not want a fresh operating system installation, Rent-A-Guru offers a security package that is very comprehensive but is not guaranteed to rid your computer of malware. Our current security procedure consists of 28 steps in which we repeatedly scan your hard drive and make sure your settings are compliant with OIT recommendations. This package costs $129 due to the relative time and effort it takes compared to the OS reinstall above.
If we cannot get rid of the virus after the security package is completed, we can do an OS install without data backup for $149 or with data backup for $179. To save yourself the extra charge following a failed security package, we urge you to consider an OS install from the start.
After You Get Your Computer Back
If you have been disconnected from the U of M Wireless network due to a virus, you can talk to us or contact 1-HELP to reactivate your account once your computer has been cleaned.
Even though your computer is protected from viruses when you get your computer back from us, it won't remain that way on its own. Make sure you update both Windows and Symantec Antivirus (or other antivirus software) on a regular basis. Also perform or schedule regular scans with your antivirus software to make sure your files are not hiding any malicious code. As much as we would like to clean out your computer again, it would be in your best interest to make sure we don't have to.
