Self-Service Password Reset:
Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of self-service password resets?

Self-service password resets allow you to reset your forgotten password online at any time, from any place, without having to call the helpline. And because you provide the answers to your security questions, it provides your account with the highest level of security.

Can I change the answers to my questions?

You can set new answers to your questions by logging in at www.umn.edu/myaccount. Click on the self-service password reset link in the "Passwords/Security" section, and follow the instructions. Be assured that your answers are secure because they are encrypted and not visible to anyone, including helpline staff.

I used to be a student and am now a staff member. Why can't I use the self-service password change option anymore?

The self-service password change option is available only to users who currently have student status, and includes students who are admitted, admitted but not registered, and those who have applied for admission.

Who do I contact if I have questions about this service?

What if I forgot my password and the answers to my security questions?

If you've forgotten your password and answers to your security questions, you'll need to contact 1-HELP to have your password reset. Once your password is reset, you can reset the answers to your questions at www.umn.edu/myaccount.
