Your U of M Internet ID and Password

Your Internet ID and password allow you to log in (sign in) to several online University services and tools — wireless Internet, e-mail, class registration and grades, and myU, to name just a few. New students must activate their Internet ID before they can use it. Internet IDs were not created for students prior to 1993.

Keep your password secret so others cannot use your identity. Protect your password as you would your credit card and PIN. Change your password periodically to help keep it safe.

Forgot your Internet ID or password? You can find your Internet ID in the University directory, or call 1-HELP if you suppressed your directory entry. If you forget your password, please call 1-HELP to have it reset. Instead of calling, you can also visit a helpdesk with current and valid photo identification (state ID, UCard, or passport).

Computers

Planning to buy? Students are eligible for several discounts on new computers. Instead of purchasing Microsoft Office or Windows with a new computer or on its own, please visit our Microsoft for students software list — it may save you hundreds of dollars!

Have your own? Protect your computer against worms, viruses, and other attacks by following our Safe Computing guides. Students qualify for education discount prices on many software packages and computer accessories and upgrades.

Use ours! Student computer facilities, in several locations on campus, are available at no additional charge to currently registered students. Communications kiosks are conveniently located for quick e-mail and Web access between classes.

Secure your computer

To prevent virus and worm infections and remote network attacks, please take some time to secure your computer. An unsecured computer is more vulnerable to identity theft and data theft, and it may be used as a base from which to compromise other computers.

Software

Antivirus. Currently enrolled students may download Symantec AntiVirus at no charge and use it on one personal computer.

Microsoft. Current students are eligible for discount prices on Microsoft software: Office, FrontPage, OneNote, Visio, and Windows. If you are buying a new computer, you can save money by obtaining Microsoft Office here instead of bundling it with the new system.

Other software:

Connect to the Internet

On campus. If you have a portable computer, wireless Internet is available in most study and commons areas. All residence halls are wired for high-speed Internet access through ResNet.

Off campus. High-speed, always-on DSL and cable Internet connections are provided by local vendors at a discount rate.

Connect with others

E-mail · IM. E-mail is an official form of communication at the University. You must check it regularly because the University sends important messages, such as registration times and holds, campus alerts, and financial aid notices. UMChat provides instant messaging (IM) and group chat to anyone with an Internet ID.

Calendar · Planner. Manage your schedule &mdash appointments, meetings, and reminders — all in one place with UMCal. You can even take it with you on a handheld device using the sync tools. Check out Campus Events to find out what's happening at the University.

Personal and group Web sites. Create blogs and podcasts with UThink. Or, if you want to try your hand at Web design, you can build a Web site for yourself or your student group. It is relatively easy to create sites inside UMWiki and the myU portal. The wiki allows for more free-form pages and simpler linking between topics, whereas myU provides more interactive features, such as polls, discussions, comment forms, and news channels.

Career and training

Training. Improve your computer skills with our instructor-led short courses, free orientations, online tutorials, and self-paced materials. Learn how to use Microsoft Office effectively, create Web pages, secure your computer, create videos, and much more.

Employment · Portfolio. View campus job postings at the Office of Human Resources. Use Portfolio to keep track of your education history, work and research experience, and awards and recognitions, and then create presentations for prospective employers. Use GoldPASS to find employment outside the University.

Graduation

Your Internet ID and e-mail will remain active for five years after you graduate. There are specific termination rules for access to University libraries, wireless and dial-up Internet, student computer labs, and other services. For details, please read our information for graduating students.
