In response to recent system outages, OIT is currently moving to new load balancing technology that will allow us to more intelligently balance resources on the current production environment. The new load balancers will allow us to detect application level fail states and slow response times and automatically adjust traffic accordingly. The new load balancers will also allow the system to segregate SSPU crawl traffic from user traffic and send each to their own pair of application nodes. This will alleviate the situation where users compete with SSPU for application resources. The new load balancers are currently installed for the test environment. OIT plans to have the new load balancers in place in production within 2 weeks after adequate testing and benchmarking has been completed.
In addition, in an effort to combat slow system performance, OIT has plans to add two application nodes to the production environment. This should provide significant performance improvement as it will double the number of machines in the cluster running Content Server. This will be complete within 1-2 months after hardware is acquired and configured.
We want to assure everyone that we are doing all we can to improve the performance and user experience in UMContent.
